Gainsborough, Gipping and Westgate’s Rotten Borough Status (The curse of being safe seats)

Bridge Ward News has come across some interesting information.Post here from Ipswich Labour Internal Member’s Newsletter.

Apart from the lie that that Ben Gummer does not have a constituency office and that it appears that an Ed Balls supporter is editing it and they think that Bridge Ward is in the bag we can deduce that Gainsborough, Gipping and Westgate have Rotten Borough status.

This is the order in which the seats will be selected:
* Gainsborough
* Gipping
* Westgate
* Priory Heath
* Bridge
* Saint Johns
* Sprites
* Whitehouse
* Rushmere
* Alexandra
* Whitton
* Stoke Park
This means that this is the order which they expect to win the seats. That’s because Labour like to put their council leadership people into seats where they don’t have to campaign or do casework.

According to the order the seats are selected Gainsbrough is the most safe, therefore it is where they are likely to put up people that serve no purpose for the people that elect them.

It is common knowledge that people who live in Gainsborough don’t just go to the butchers in Cliff Lane to buy meat. Keith Rawlingson, Martin Cook and John Mowles don’t have much work to do because the residents of Gainsborough go to George Debman, David Hale and Liz Harsant of Holywells instead. Of course they do have the advantage of living in the area, as the Holywells councillors do. Jupiter Road, Whitby Road and Tuddenham Road are all a bit of a distance from Gainsborough.

The second ward on the list is Gipping where the councillors are Jeannette Macartney Peter Gardiner and David Ellesmere. You are not likely to see Jeannette Macartney outside Chantry if at all. We tend to hear from her around the time she is up for re-election. I have heard that Peter Gardiner has some case work around Burlington Road somewhere and David Ellesmere shows up at the street prostitution strategy briefings. Radcliffe Drive, Regina Close and Warwick Road are all a considerable distance from this ward.

Third on the list is Westgate. The councilors Lib Dem Andrew Cann (who seems to be obsessed with re-opening Broomhill Swimming pool.) Then there are Labour councillors Mary Blake and Carole Jones.

I know of nobody who lives in Westgate who has ever set eyes on Mary Blake. Carole Jones goes to the street prostitution strategy briefings with David Ellsmere where in the past she has been condecending about the London Road area saying what a dump it is. She seems to think the people are so stupid that they will vote labour anyway. Also, Mitford Close and Warwick road are a considerable distance from Westgate Ward.

    Hope you are going to do a similar expose on Tories in Bixley and stoke Park

  3. It wasn’t that long ago that Stoke Park was also considered a safe Labour seat. The Conservatives polled over 40% in Stoke Park because the residents of it have noticed an improvement in the work of their local councilors since it has been Conservative. The fact that Bixley was canvassed during the election campaign by the Conservatives shows that the Conservatives are not taking Bixley for granted.

  4. A Ross says:

    So, you seem to be sying as the Tories are doing a good job in Stoke Park it does not matter that Cllr Pope lives the other side of the town? If that is true then you should remove your story about Gainsborough Cllrs not living in the ward!

  5. As Paul West and Nadia Cenci do live in the ward of Stoke Park while none of the Gainsbourough councilors live in Gainsborough, Stoke Park is better served by its councilors than Gainsborough. 2 out of 3 aint bad. 0 out of 3 is.

    So since when has Radcliffe Drive been miles away from Gipping ward? It’s about 300 yards from Gipping. OK it isn’t in Gipping, it’s in Sprites, but it does rather undermine your argument. Jeanette Macartney might not often leave Chantry, but since the majority of her ward is in Chantry estate that doesn’t necessarily matter if David Ellesmere and Peter Gardiner are adequately representing the residents of that small part of Gipping outside of the Chantry estate?

    Both the main parties have form on using their “safe” seats for senior councillors. At least Labour fill their safe seats with leadership material. It wasn’t that long ago that Bixley had Stephen Barker and Gordon Terry – Ashbocking and Rowanhayes aren’t exactly local…

  7. Hi Ipswich Spy,

    300 yards? It’s a lot further than that!

    Have you only stoped bloging now everyone knows who you are?

  8. A Ross says:

    Rushmere- o out of 2 Tories live in ward- your facts don’t add up – even in castle Hill- one does not even live in the Borough. Your comment at the end of your reply to Ipswich Spy sums you up, You can’t have a go at Labour Clltrs in Gainsborogh and then make an excuse for Cllrs Pope, Terry, Smith, Harsant, De Hoet -

  9. Alasdair, My facts do add up. All you have done is defend your mates who are councillors in Labours safe seats by attacking the Tories. The fact that you live in your ward is to your credit. As Rushmere is not a safe seat the people of that ward do no get a rough deal. Out of interest, how many doors did you knock on last week? If you have complaints by people in Bixley please feel free to share them.

    I forgot that you were about the only person who didn’t know who Ipswich Spy was.

  10. Labour for ever says:

    Did the games master really use Stoke Park as an example of absentee councillors (rather than, say, Sprites) and it wasn’t some Tory simply setting up a straw man? PE instructors were always known for their, how shall one say it, lack of intellectual inclinations.

    Blimey. All those expensively educated brats must be getting massacred on the rugby pitch. “Go on Pettingrew minor, run into that gorilla three times your size.” The hospital must dread when Ipswich School has a match day.

    The day we put up a private school teacher up as a councillor was the day that class solidarity died.

  11. I sense a disturbance in the farce.
