I can actually sympathise with Cameron as Feldman actually seems like a very good chief exec in many ways, and the activists will have to swallow this insult (although Feldman might want to give a generous donation to some swivel eyed campaign to prove his bona fides). It probably comes straight from Cameron any way. But it never looked like a UKIP smear campaign.

A number of quite respected journalists supposedly heard it in the lobby. The story appeared in The Times, The Daily Telegraph and the Independent. The Independent apart those are hardly left wing luvvies.

Tim Montgomerie, he of Conservative Home fame, said that he had heard similar sentiments expressed before, by those in Number 10.

Guido is running the story, naming who it was supposed to be. I have to say if it was who is alleged, it really is a surprise.

The reason the newspapers concerned have not, yet, named this person is simple – the understanding that what is said in the lobby to journalists, under lobby rules, is unattributable. Of course those rules may be broken if CCHQ and Number 10 keep this story alive by insisting it was never said…
