Ipswich Labour: Nasty, Spiteful, Vindictive and Incompetant

As Judy Terry Said

“what a vicious contest it was, with Labour’s malignant personal attacks on candidates and councillors who weren’t even standing for re-election! Leaflets, blogs and verbal assaults were the order of the day, accompanied by banner waving against cuts. Yet, Ipswich Borough Council had not made cuts in services.”

Gavin Maclure attended the Annual Meeting of Ipswich Borough Council He’s bloged about it here.
In the post Gavin Maclure says

“Let’s be frank though, Labour won power this year at the local elections because they lied. They ran the cuts narrative on libraries and school crossing patrols when in fact not one had been cut. Labour also knows Ipswich Borough Council is responsible for not one library or crossing patrol as these are Suffolk County Council responsibilities but they still proceeded to cleverly confuse County and Borough with the electorate. In short, they scared the electorate into voting Labour. The Conservatives can be accused of many things but they would never stoop that low.”

Then Gavin says this

“With a majority of eight on the Borough Council (huge in local government terms), you would have thought Labour would be magnanimous in victory during the transfer of power last night. Not one bit. Council Leader<David Ellesmere used the two motions to appoint his Executive and Committee placings to accuse the Conservatives of "letting the voters down" by not wishing to sit in the Cabinet (also known as the Executive) with Labour. Does Ed Milliband sit in the cabinet with David Cameron? No of course not and why would he when Labour lost!
This was pure vindictiveness from Labour."

Isn’t it amazing? Labour haven’t even messed up yet and David Ellesmere is already blaming the Conservatives.

Gavin also said

“At the same meeting, Cllr John Carnall started his tenure as Conservative leader in terrific form. When he challenged a constitutional point regarding the election of the Deputy Leader, in which he correctly pointed out that the new rules passed by the Council in December mean the Leader of the Council appoints their Deputy rather than the Council electing the Deputy, he was told to “sit down” by newly elected Labour Mayor, Cllr John Le Grys. Moments later officers caught up and realised Cllr Carnall was indeed right and he was allowed to stand up again to make his point after asking the Mayor to apologise, which he refused to do.”

Minutes into office and Ipswich Labour’s incompetance has shown already.

Also the Lib Dems decided to have someone on the scrutiny committee so they can continue their tactic of claiming responsibility for things that are popular and blaming the larger party they are with for things that are not popular.

Labour wanted John Carnall on the scrutiny committee so that when they messed things up they could say that it was because he wasn’t scrutinising things enough. The Conservatives saw through Labours plan and refused.

Mayor Making is an important date in the civic calendar, and John Carnall was correct a mistake had been made in the agenda by an Officer, but why did Cllr Carnall not bring this to the attention of the Chief Executive when he received the agenda rather than bring it up on the night. He just embarrassed the council (and himself) he would have impressed many if he had acted in the best interest of Ipswich rather than try and score petty points.

    • John Carnall merely pointed out the fact that the new rules passed by the Council in December mean the Leader of the Council appoints their Deputy rather than the Council electing the Deputy. As the point was acurate why was the response from Cllr John Le Grys to tell him to sit down?

When officers realised Cllr Carnall was right and he was allowed to stand up again to make his point, why didn’t Cllr John Le Grys apologise?

Cllr John Le Grys sounds more like a court jestor than a mayor.

  2. A Ross says:

you still did not answer the question – why did Cllr Carnall not nform the Chief Executive before the meeting?

Cllr Terry, having a go at blogs and leaflets – the only two blogs that I know who male a habit of calling Cllrs insulting names are yours and Bridge Ward News – or was she having a go at your blogs? The only leaflet that was insulting was the one from the Tory Party in Rushmere, having a go at the Labour candidate for not living in the ward – forgetting to mention that the Tory and Lib Dem candidate also live outside the ward (as does Cllr Terry)

Labour did not ask for Cllr Carnall to be on Scrutiny, they offered the Chair of Scrutiny to the Conservatives – they could nominate who they want- this is recommended ‘best practise’ for scrutiny.

You state – ‘Labour wanted John Carnall on the scrutiny committee so that when they messed things up they could say that it was because he wasn’t scrutinising things enough’ – so by your reckoning we can blame Cllr Bee on the County, as he was chair of Scrutiny – so making him leader is the same as if they had given it to existing members of the cabinet like Noble?
