Ellesmere’s Latest Star Column

In today’s Morning Ipswich Star, David Ellesmere claims that by paying the living wage his administration are boosting the local economy. He claims that because Borough Staff have more money to spend, they will spend it in the local economy, giving the local economy a boost. Sounds reasonable until you factor in the fact that to pay a living wage, Mr Ellesmere’s administration has raised council tax, giving the majority of Ipswich people less expendable income to spend locally, meaning that there is no overall gain by the policies of Ipswich Labour. So what he says sounds good but has no substance.
