Here I said
An unelected all-male village council in India has ordered that 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister are raped.
The ‘sentence’ was handed down as punishment after their brother eloped with a married woman. They also ordered for the sisters to be paraded naked with blackened faces. Nothing could justify this abhorrent punishment.
Over 300,000 signed Amnesty International’s petition calling on the state authorities to grant them protection. Now, India’s Supreme Court has ruled that the women and their family must be protected from potential abuses by the villagers.
The family have told Amnesty international that they are grateful. But sadly, they don’t yet feel safe enough to go home.
Amnesty will continue to work with Meenakshi, her sister and family to make sure they receive full protection and support to live wherever they choose in peace.
