Defence Spending

Yesterday the Prime Minister committed to go above and beyond our manifesto commitment, giving our nation’s defence the largest boost its seen in the last 30 years – investing an extra £24 billion in our national security, which will create thousands of jobs across the UK.Announcing the biggest investment in British defence since the end of the Cold War.In total, the military will now see a cash increase of £24.1 billion over the next 4 years – providing an extra £16.5 billion in funding above our 2019 Manifesto commitment. This will allow us to undertake a generational modernisation programme and upgrade our defence arsenal to meet today’s threats.

The Prime Minister took this decision in the teeth of the pandemic because the defence of the realm must come first.And with the global situation more perilous and more intensely competitive than at any time since the Cold War, the UK must stand alongside ourallies as a top investor in defence.Which is why this historic investment will allow us to:Spread prosperity across the UK with 40,000 new jobs Revitalise UK shipbuilding, expanding our warship building programme on the ClydeSet up the UK’s new Space Command, with the first rocket launched from Scotland in 2022Become a global leader in cyber through a new National Cyber ForceCreate a new agency dedicated to Artificial IntelligenceSafeguard 400,000 existing jobs across the Union.
